We recommend premium pet foods for our client's dogs and cats. There are many brands from which to choose. Your Veterinarian can give you helpful information, or you can visit your local Petco, PetSmart or PetSupermarket and spend an hour reading and comparing ingredients.
Although you may think that pet food manufacturers have your pet's best interests in mind when formulating their products, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly feed your pet. In fact, you would be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain!
Many foods contain by-products like beaks, feet, bones and intestines, chemical preservatives like BHA and BHT, and low-quality or inferior grades of grains like corn, wheat, gluten and soy; which are used as a protein source but are difficult for pets to digest. Poor quality ingredients provide poor nutrition and put unneccessary stress on your pet's system and can lead to diminished overall health.
We practice what we preach. Our dogs Jack and Lola both eat Dick Van Patton's Natural Balance Premium Original Formula. Their treats are Dick Van Patton's Natural Balance treats in the various flavors they produce. The Natural Balance website is: NaturalBalanceInc.com
Because Lola is still a young puppy and was rescued from the parking lot of an apartment complex, she is still on the thin side, so we supplement her with Halo's Spots Stew Salmon Puppy Food, per our Vet's advice.
We also feed Jack and Lola a few bites of scrambled egg (Organic Vegetarian Grain Fed Brown Eggs), hormone-free roasted chicken, steamed organic vegetables, and a little organic pasta with Anthony's homemade spaghetti sauce each week. (We are an Italian household - "pasta and gravy" once per week is the law!) They also get a small dollop of organic plain yogurt with live cultures twice a week. They don't get foods grown or made with hormones, nitrates, and antibiotics.
Don't think that we go to a lot of trouble to feed our dogs. It's just as easy to measure out their dry food from a bag of premium, high quality dog food as it is to measure out a cup of the other stuff. And their little bits of "people food" come from the organic and high quality food we purchase and prepare for ourselves.
Yes, we have to make a special trip to a pet food store every few weeks. But what's 20 minutes? We more than make up that time by not having to go to the Vet as often because good nutrition enhances good health. And, dogs eat less premium food than the cheap stuff - they don't need as much to get the nutrients they need. And, most premium foods have a "Buy 9, get the 10th bag free" program. So the cost evens out as well.
We encourage our clients to feed their pets quality foods and treats to maintain good health and happy pets!
